Idris Elba says he doesn’t want roles that “define” him while addressing James Bond rumours

Idris Elba has discussed the prospect of playing 007 in future James Bond films, explaining he doesn’t want to take on a role that will “define” him.

The Luther actor has been heavily-rumoured to be stepping into the iconic spy’s shoes after Daniel Craig leaves the hit franchise. Last year, he played along with the speculation by tweeting a photo of himself, along with the caption: “My name’s Elba, Idris Elba.”

Now, it seems unlikely that we will be seeing Elba on the big screen as Bond – with the star airing his reasons for shying away from the high-profile job.

“Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it,” Elba told Event magazine.

“You’re that character, and known as that character for many, many years. I’m creating characters now that can still live alongside Idris. Not ones that take over me and solely define me.”

Earlier this year, Elba teased those hoping to see him play James Bond by posting a selfie with Daniel Craig. “Awks”, he captioned the photo of the pair attending the Golden Globes.

The rumours surrounding Elba’s potential casting as Bond also ramped into overdrive after it was reported that producer Barbara Broccoli had previously admitted “it is time” for a non-white actor to take over the role of Bond, adding that it “will happen eventually.”

However, the conversation was later denied by representatives for the Bond boss.

Meanwhile, it has recently been reported that Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond will shoot under the working title Shatterhand. The movie is said to be beginning production on April 6.
